These competitions were first held in 1984, the 2nd year of the National Carnival.
The honour boards have some illustrious names for both the Carnival Sprint & Longest Kick including:
- Ray Buckley – father of Nathan Buckley – who recorded the longest ever kick recorded in Superules/Masters Australian Football/AFL Masters History with a whopping 67.2m in the inaugural Longest Kick competition
- Donny “Brocky” Dykes – who has won the Longest Kick an amazing 9 times.
- John Davies – the only umpire to ever win the Carnival Sprint in 1990
This year the Carnival Sprint has been renamed the Neil King Carnival Sprint in honour of Neil’s longstanding contribution to AFL Masters as 19 and a half years as National General Manager. For those that do not know Neil’s history, he was once an elite sprinter himself. Neil was a Stawell Gift finalist, he coached four Stawell Gift winners before going on to be the CEO of Athletics Australia. After missing the opportunity to say goodbye to everyone thanks to two COVID-interpreted years, it is with great pleasure to hear that Neil and Mary will be at the Carnival this year.
As we will be playing at two different venues on Friday, the Carnival Sprint & the Longest Kick will also be at 2 venues on Friday 1pm:
Mens – Barratt Oval 2
Womens – Hisense Richmond Oval
With KommunityTV cameras at both grounds, it is likely that this year will see the Carnival Sprint & Longest Kick broadcast into living rooms throughout the nation.
